Darwin City Council has awarded the contract for a project on Lee Point Road that will widen the road to cope with increased traffic volumes.
Local company Gilbert Mining Group has won the $9.5 million contract and will be widening the road to a double carriageway between Vanderlin Drive and Asche Street.
Traffic levels have increased along the road as a result of recent property developments in the area, so the upgrade will mean less congestion for residents of real estate in Darwin, according to Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim.
"Council’s Developer Contribution Plan ensures funds are available for road works where future traffic volumes and congestion result from new property developments," she said.
Those considering property in Darwin, particularly in the Northern suburbs, will benefit from the upgrade.
The upgrade, which should be finished by February 2014, will also provide a boost to the local economy, with new jobs created and workers required in the area.
Funding for the project has come from the City of Darwin's Developer Contribution Plan as well as from the Northern Territory Government.
