The iconic Darwin Cup Carnival was officially opened last night (July 2), giving owners of property in Darwin another chance to get caught up in the excitement of great Australian racing.
This year, the four-week long carnival will kick off with the Hot 100 Darwin Guineas and finish up with the crowd-pleasing Carlton Mid Darwin Cup on August 5.
Around 44,000 eager spectators attended last year's carnival – including plenty of visitors from out of town – and this year minister for racing Matt Conlan expects a similar turnout.
"The Darwin Cup Carnival is one of the biggest events on the Territory's calendar and the 2013 carnival promises to be another exciting and action-packed affair," Mr Conlan said in a July 2 statement.
"This provides a great boost to our tourism industry and with our hotels, cafes, restaurants, shops, bars and pubs full during the four weeks, it's no wonder the carnival injects around $50 million to the Territory economy."
This year marks the 57th outing of the much-loved carnival and there's a total of $1.95 million worth of prize money on offer.
With some of the country's best trainers and 125 horses from Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia participating in the carnival, this year is sure to be an action-packed event for residents with real estate in Darwin.
